Sealing HVAC systems: It can be used to seal ductwork, air vents, and other components of HVAC systems, helping to improve energy efficiency and indoor air quality.
Bonding materials together: The sealant can be used as an adhesive to bond materials together, such as metal, glass, and plastics.
Sealing exterior surfaces: The sealant can be used to seal exterior surfaces, such as roofs, gutters, and siding, to prevent water infiltration and improve durability.
Automotive applications: It can be used in automotive applications to seal windows, headlights, and other components.
Marine applications: The sealant can be used in marine applications to seal around hatches, ports, and other components, helping to prevent water intrusion.
How To Use Preparation
Here are the general steps for preparing and using DOWSIL™ General Purpose Silicone Sealant:
Surface preparation: The surface to be sealed must be clean, dry, and free of dust, oil, and other contaminants. Use a suitable cleaning solution, such as isopropyl alcohol, to clean the surface thoroughly. Ensure that the surface is completely dry before applying the sealant.
Cutting the nozzle: Cut the nozzle of the sealant tube at a 45-degree angle to the desired bead size.
Load the sealant into the caulking gun: Load the sealant tube into a standard caulking gun and press the plunger until the sealant appears at the tip of the nozzle.
Apply the sealant: Apply the sealant in a continuous bead along the surface to be sealed. Use steady pressure on the caulking gun to maintain a consistent bead size and flow rate. Tool the sealant immediately after application with a putty knife or finger to ensure a smooth, even seal.
Clean up: Remove any excess sealant before it cures using a suitable tool, such as a putty knife or scraper. Clean up any uncured sealant with a suitable solvent, such as isopropyl alcohol.
Cure time: Allow the sealant to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions before exposing it to water, weather, or other environmental factors.
Usable Life and Storage
Usable life: The usable life of DOWSIL™ General Purpose Silicone Sealant can vary depending on the specific product formulation and environmental conditions. In general, the shelf life of an unopened sealant is typically 12 to 18 months from the date of manufacture. Once opened, the sealant can remain usable for several weeks to several months, depending on the storage conditions and the specific product formulation. It is important to check the product datasheet and instructions for use for specific guidance on usable life.
Storage: To ensure the longest possible shelf life and usable life of DOWSIL™ General Purpose Silicone Sealant, store the product in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and sources of heat. Do not freeze the sealant. Store the product upright to prevent settling or separation. If the product has been opened, replace the cap tightly and store it in a cool, dry place.
Limitations
Not suitable for all materials: It is designed for use on non-porous surfaces such as glass, metal, and ceramics. It may not adhere well to certain porous materials or surfaces that are treated with release agents or other coatings.
Limited temperature range: It is suitable for use in a temperature range of -60°C to 204°C (-76°F to 400°F). It is not recommended for use in high-temperature applications above 204°C (400°F).
Not recommended for structural bonding: DOWSIL™ General Purpose Silicone Sealant is not recommended for use in structural bonding applications where high strength or load-bearing capability is required.
Limited UV resistance: While DOWSIL™ General Purpose Silicone Sealant is resistant to weathering, it may not be suitable for prolonged exposure to sunlight or UV radiation. If used in outdoor applications, it may need to be periodically reapplied or supplemented with additional UV-resistant coatings.
Not recommended for use in food contact applications: It is not recommended for use in applications where it may come into direct contact with food or drinking water.
