Colors

DOWSIL™ SJ-169 Silicone WS Stone Sealant is available in a range of colors to match different types of natural stone surfaces. The standard colors offered by the manufacturer include:

White Black
Limestone Bronze
Gray Grey
Tan

In addition to these standard colors, the manufacturer can also provide custom color matching services to match specific natural stone colors, based on customer requirements.

WEATHERSEAL JOINT DESIGN

A thin silicone bead will allow for more movement than a thick bead (see Figure 1). For joints where excessive movement is expected, DOWSIL SJ-169 Silicone WS Stone Sealant should be no thicker than 12 mm and no thinner than 6 mm. The ideal joint width to sealant depth ratio is about 2:1.

Most joints should be backed with open-cell polyurethane foam, closed-cell polyethylene, or non-gassing polyolefin; for joints that are too shallow for backer rods, use polyethylene tape. These materials permit the application of a thin bead and act as bond breakers, allowing the silicone sealant to move freely with the joint.

Because of seasonal and daily temperature changes, the width of building expansion joints varies. If installing DOWSIL SJ-169 Silicone WS Stone Sealant when the design width is halfway between the dimensional extremes is not possible, the designed joint should be at least twice as wide as the total anticipated joint movement. The joint design should be four times the anticipated movement due to construction tolerances and material variations, according to good architectural practice.

Joint Dimensions

Allow a minimum width of 6 mm for the sealant bead on small curtain wall panels. When working with larger panels or panels that are expected to move a lot, the joint size should be determined by the calculated joint movement.

Usable Life and Storage

Usable life: The usable life of the sealant depends on the environmental conditions in which it is used. The sealant provides long-lasting performance when used in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.

Storage temperature: The sealant should be stored at a temperature between 5°C (41°F) and 27°C (80°F) to maintain its quality.

Limitations

While DOWSIL™ SJ-169 Silicone WS Stone Sealant is a high-performance sealant that provides excellent adhesion and weather resistance, there are some limitations to consider. Here are some of the key limitations to keep in mind:

Not suitable for all substrates: While this sealant is designed for natural stone surfaces, it may not be suitable for all substrates. It is recommended to conduct a small test patch to ensure compatibility with the substrate before proceeding with the full application.

Not suitable for below-grade applications: This sealant is not recommended for use in below-grade applications or for continuous water immersion.

Not suitable for structural glazing: This sealant is not recommended for structural glazing applications or for use in load-bearing joints.

Not suitable for some high-temperature applications: This sealant is not recommended for use in applications where the temperature exceeds 121°C (250°F).

Not suitable for some sensitive substrates: This sealant may not be suitable for use on some sensitive substrates, such as polycarbonate, acrylics, and some plastics.

Not paintable: DOWSIL™ SJ-169 Silicone WS Stone Sealant is not recommended for use in applications where the sealant will be painted.
